Next Release

John Ralls-2
I'll be going on vacation next week, for just over 3 weeks. I'll have internet access, though I don't know how fast it will be, and I'll take along a build environment and sources so that I can answer questions, mentor Muslim, and work on bugs (at a low level of effort except for mentoring, of course: It is vacation, after all).

I won't have the ability to build for PPC, and I doubt I'll have the bandwidth needed to upload dmgs to Sourceforge. So while it's been only a month since we released 2.4.6, if we want to release 2.4.7 before August, this week would be a good time to do it.

Regards,
John Ralls

Re: Next Release

Christian Stimming-4
Good idea! I think we should try to go for a release this week, as we already
collected a nice bunch of bugfixes in the 2.4 branch.

Does r20801 (2.4-branch) build on Mac OSX? I can go ahead and tag that rev by,
say, next wednesday so that we have a release ready by the end of the week.

Regards,

Christian

It builds, but fails make check. Details below.

I also need to commit the fix for https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=653056 before you tag it. I'll have that in today, but sorting the check failure may take a little longer.

Hmm, gncOwnerBeginEdit is only introduced in trunk, not on the 2.4 branch. I
have just rechecked this on my system. It seems your build is mixing the two
branches.

Yup, false alarm, I forgot to run make distcheck to clear out the swig files so I had business-core.c from trunk which imported a symbol that isn't in 2.4. Everything passes now, and the fix for 653056 is checked in.
If no one else has anything else that needs to go into 2.4.7, Christian can update configure.ac and tag it.

John Ralls

I have nothing more to add to the code before 2.4.7.

However, I'd like to point at a documentation bug that may impact this
release:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=652350

Cristian Marchi, our currently most active documentation developer, has asked
to release the documentation together with the new release. There are many
changes in the documentation that never were released so far.

I know the documentation release is independent of the program in principle,
but both the Windows and the OS X build include it by default. And all linux
distributions create a separate package for the documentation. In that view it
would indeed be good to release the documentation as well.

I know how to tag a release, create a tarball and set up the new release on
our website. But I don't know or don't have permission for the other steps:
- how to upload the tarball to Sourceforge ?
- how about a news item ? Is there some template to reuse, or should we create
a new one ? Anyone volunteering ?

Are we waiting on something to do this release (or releases, if all the doc changes are in svn and ready for release)?

Geert, you're an admin on the sourceforge project, so while you already have release and shell access to upload to frs, even if you didn't you could fix it yourself. 652350 seems to be about setting up a formal release process. We can do that, but I don't think that's a prerequisite for releasing 2.4.7. See the Sourceforge docs on how to use the files page (or just go to it; they've made using it pretty obvious.)

I've got some errands to run, but if no one objects and no one else has done so, I'll update the version numbers, tag the versions, and make dist this afternoon. (Three changes, right? Gnucash itself 2.4.7, Gnucash-Docs 2.2.2, and Gnucash-Docs 2.4.1?)

John Ralls

I wasn't aware I had become an admin on our sourceforge page.  Indeed in that
case I could make any changes necessary.

Ok for me.

Once the tags are in, I'll try to come up with a news article for the two
documentation releases, and put the documentation on our website.

I've committed the version change to Gnucash itself and started making the tag. That turns out to be a lengthy process in Git-svn, it may take an hour or so.

The trunk documents are in kind of a strange state. They were tagged 5 months ago (when we released 2.4.0) as 2.4.0, but configure.in wasn't changed and nobody put a tarball up on Sourceforge. On the other hand, we have a docs/2.4 directory in the website containing what appear to be 2.3.7 documents copyright 2001-2007 Chris Lyttle -- who appears not to have committed anything since, but that might be because the appropriate page never got updated. I'll look into fixing that up so that Christian and Yawar get some credit.

But I wonder, since it seems we've never actually done a 2.4 documents release, should this be 2.4.0 (and I delete the existing 2.4.0 tag and make a new one) or should I not worry too much about 2.4.0 and just call this 2.4.1?

Regards,
John Ralls

I'm rather talking to myself tonight.

Everything is updated and tagged. I have tarballs ready for upload for all three packages. I haven't done anything yet with any news items, and I haven't changed anything on the website yet.

I've also started the 2.4.7 Mac builds.

Now it's bedtime.

I noticed this as well after my yesterday's reply. It was me that created the
2.4.0 tag, but I clearly forgot to update the relevant configuration
parameters.

At that point I didn't have access yet to SourceForge and it didn't even occur
to me to upload the tarball. I remember my goal then was to update the
documentation available on the website.

This mess is why I wanted to get the documentation release process written
down.

I would just go for 2.4.1, as you did.

Heh. Sorry for not speaking up - turns out I was rather busy this week. Thanks
a lot for actually tagging SVN so that we can go ahead with the releases!

Thanks.

I'll try to come up with some release notes/announcement for the documentation
releases. And in the process, I'll attempt to write down how I did it for
future releases.

Can someone who already created news items for the program release before take
care of the program release message ?

Yes, I can do that sometime until tomorrow afternoon.

Just a quick note:
I have updated the documentation on the gnucash website and am currently
uploading the source tarballs for the documentation to SF.

Once that's done, I'll put up the documentation release news items.

The program uploads can follow when ready.

Geert

The release manager notes for documentation I created along the way can be
found here:
http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Documentation_Release_Process

Feel free to add improvements or corrections.

The news item for the program 2.4.7 is written and committed to the website.
It can be copied from there into an announcement email.

For the program on sourceforge, a 2.4.7 folder has been created and the
windows binary has been uploaded. We still need to upload source tgz and
tar.bz2 and the Mac OSX binaries. Once this is done, the announcement can be
sent out. Can either one of you, John and Geert, do this once the last uploads
are done? Thanks!

No wiki/Documentation_Release_Process; was: Next Release - and Documentation release ?

when I went on that page it was not there. Searching for Documentation+Release
gave me also no sufficent result. I have added a short template and a few
for- and backward links.

Questions: Is there a typo in the link or got the page lost? In the latter
case do you have some backup?

Re: No wiki/Documentation_Release_Process; was: Next Release - and Documentation release ?

Cristian Marchi
I can answer your questions: the page got lost almost in the same day
when Geert published it due to a problem with the wiki. I saw the page
myself when it was published but I wasn't able to restore it by looking
in my browser's cache.

When Geert will get some time, I'm sure it will rewrite it.

Cristian
