Gnucash-2.0.4 Make Error

Rich Shepard
Gentlemen:

I'm slowly resolving missing libraries and getting closer to a complete,
clean build.

Now, however, after 6 minutes running time, I'm missing

grep: /usr/lib/libgsf-gnome-1.la: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libgsf-gnome-1.la: No such file or
directory
libtool: link: /usr/lib/libgsf-gnome-1.la' is not a valid libtool archive

All I have installed here is /usr/lib/libgsf-gnome-1.so.114. When I look on
the Freerock Gnome ftp site I cannot find libgsf or libgsf-gnome. I also
cannot find any source on gnome.org or via a Google search.

Please point me toward the source tarball I need to build that library
here.

Thanks,

Rich

ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/libgsf/1.14

Make sure you build with the --enable-gnome option.

Also, if/when you build goffice, make sure you use the --enable-gnome
option as well.

Also, 2.0.5 was released last night; if you're going to build from
sources, build that.

   Thanks, Josh.

I built and upgraded both libgsf and goffice, then configured and built
gnucash-2.0.5.

When I invoke it (requirs the full path of /usr/local/bin/gnucash), the
splash screen displays as well as the small application window. Then it
hangs. In the console I see:

[rshepard@salmo ~]$ /usr/local/bin/gnucash
freeing NULL pointer

   What might be causing that?

Thanks,

Rich

I've never seen that before, personally or via the mailing lists.

Your mail implies that there is a gnucash installed into /usr/ as well
(thus necessitating the qualification of /usr/local/bin/gnucash).  I
don't know why, but having an install in both /usr and /usr/local/
doesn't work in strange, subtle ways.

If you want to install a development version, install it into (something
like) /opt/gnucash/unstable/.  Or, since it's a stable release, install
into /usr directly.  Use the '--prefix' option to ./configure to control
the installation prefix.

Josh,

I don't know where you read that. I uninstalled the non-working former
version of gnucash-2.0.4 before building and installing -2.0.5. I was
probably impatient in invoking it yesterday so I entered the full path.

Gnucash is located in only /usr/loca/bin. Because it's not a system
application -- and is installed and used on only a single host -- it's
installed there rather than in /usr/bin.

There were no errors in config.log and make exited normally. No indication
of a missing library; 'ldd /usr/local/bin/gnucash-bin' shows they're all
found.

   I'll try one more time.

Well, I'm giving up. I used gnucash for several years, and brought it
through a number of distribution upgrades. However, I now seem to have a
situation that cannot be resolved. There's nothing in any log file to show
why the application tries 'freeing NULL pointer' when invoked. No config
errors, no make errors, installation generates multiple warnings about gnome
libraries appearing to have been moved, but nothing fatal and those
libraries are where they were before.

   It's beaten me.

Is anything interesting in /tmp/gnucash.trace?

If you run the app under GDB, does it exit cleanly?

This is a libtool warning, and they are ignorable, yes.

Huh.  Are you able to write to /tmp?  Can you `touch` the file?  It
should be written to pretty readily when gnucash does nearly anything.

Sorry, let me rephrase: please run the app under GDB to see if does not
exit cleanly.

    $ /usr/local/bin/gnucash-env gdb /usr/local/bin/gnucash-bin
    (gdb) run

My abject apologies!! I kept reading this as the Gnome interface for
runlevel 5. Yes, it's been that sort of week already. I'll be back with a
report.

Josh,

   Here is the result:

Wow, this looks like guile is broken..  It's apparently dying in
scm_boot_guile()!  Um, wow..  Umm.. No idea what to say to that
except ask if you could try a different version of guile?

   I have installed

[rshepard@salmo ~]$ ll /usr/lib/libguile.so.1?
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 2007-02-14 15:31 /usr/lib/libguile.so.12 ->
/usr/local/usr/lib/libguile.so.12.3.0*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 2007-02-14 15:22 /usr/lib/libguile.so.17 ->
libguile.so.17.0.0*

   Does gnucash-2.0.5 want libguile.so.12.3.0 instead of libguile.so.17.0.0?

It all depends what it was built against..  It looks like you have both
1.6.x and 1.8.x installed together, which could be confusing if some
libraries were built against one version and other libraries were built
against another version!

I notice that Gentoo exposes both 'debug-freelist' and 'debug-malloc'
options for building guile; my system does not have either enabled and
works with gnucash-2.0.4.  I'd guess that your guile is built with one
of them, and it is responsible for the message and abort as seen here.

For the sake of completeness, I note that Gentoo requires -- for gnucash
-- that guile is built with the options 'deprecated', 'discouraged' and
'regex'.  I don't know if you did, but you might need to as well.

Josh/Derek:

Just rebuilt guile-1.8.1 from the source tarball and installed it. Since
gnucash-2.0.5 still wouldn't run I tried to make it again. Now I'm seeing
this error:

make[3]: Entering directory
/data1/srcfiles/gnucash/gnucash-2.0.5/src/engine'
chmod u+x ./iso-currencies-to-c
GUILE_LOAD_PATH=: srcdir=. ./iso-currencies-to-c
ERROR: Unbound variable: slib:features
make[3]: *** [iso-4217-currencies.c] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory /data1/srcfiles/gnucash/gnucash-2.0.5/src/engine'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory /data1/srcfiles/gnucash/gnucash-2.0.5/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory /data1/srcfiles/gnucash/gnucash-2.0.5'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I took the default prefix for guile-1.8.1 of /usr/local. Other make errors
occurred as it sought slib/*.scm files in /usr rather than /usr/local.
Soft links fixed all those, but I don't know what to do about this one.

One step forward, one step back. I'll willingly try your recommendations
on rebuilding gnucash.

Thanks again,

Rich
