[GNC] Saving in GnuCash painfully slow: what can I do?

Hmm
What can I do to speed things up? I am using GnuCash on a Windows 7 system.

Thank you

What version of GnuCash are you using?
What do you define as "painfully slow"?
What backend are you using?

Hmm
Hi, I am using the most recent version. The backend I am using, if I
understand correctly is .xml.

What I mean is saving your data on GnuCash is painfully slow. It takes 10+
minutes even for small banking transactions to save.

Please identify the GnuCash version by the number that you see on the
splash screen when the program starts and also mention which operating
system you have. The various recent versions differ significantly under the
hood, and the developers are concerned about which versions are working
better or worse.

It also helps to mention some general information about the type of
computer ie newer laptop, for example, and whether you are using cloud
storage or built-in ssd drive, for example.

The XML backend doesn’t save just the transaction, it saves the whole book. Every time. The SQL backend saves each transaction (or more correctly, commits each transaction to the database) when it’s committed in GnuCash.

That said, I tested save time yesterday on Windows with a 53MB (uncompressed) book. Saves took about 50 seconds.

There’s an open bug on the topic, https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795804 <https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795804>. Users have reported that they’ve observed a significant speedup by shrinking the window and in once case by turning off display scaling.

Regards,
John Ralls

Re: [GNC] Saving in GnuCash painfully slow: what can I do?

Hmm
I'm using Build ID: 3.2+ (2018-06-24).

Where is the option to change scaling?

Additionally, Auto Clear takes an insanely long time even if I just exit
without changing. I can tell that my cpu is ramped up after a few months and
my task manager shows high cpu usage with Auto Clear.

I am thinking it's best to ditch this application and just save my financial
transactions in Excel or use Mint.  I never had any issues with my Quicken
application.

Re: [GNC] Saving in GnuCash painfully slow: what can I do?

I am researching the issue with Auto Clear,as it is something that I have
not seen before.  So far, I found out that it is supposed to be started
from the Accounts window Actions menu and it is supposed to cause a screen
to open where one can try to coax GnuCash into clearing multiple
transactions in one fell swoop, presumably on the account that is currently
highlighted in that window.  Also, it supposedly has been there since 2010,
having been implemented as noted in <
https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=608436>.

However, I cannot seem to get it started, and I am wondering if others,
including Hmm have been able to use it with at least some success.  If so,
how does it work?
