[GNC] Just updated to MacOSX Catalina and GnuCash will not open.

GJS
Hi,
I've run 2.6 on previous version of MacOSX but couldn't install 3.6.
Having updated to Catalina none of my 32 bit software works! Thanks Apple.
Downloaded 3.7-1. Clicking the file opens a folder containing six files
but not the usual File -> Applications facility. Clicking the Gnucash
icon starts the verification process that loads the disc image on the
desktop, puts an icon in the taskbar and leads to the "do you really
want to open it?" dialogue. Choosing "Open" closes the window and
removes the icon from the taskbar. Only the disc icon is left which
invites one to do it all again ad nauseam.

Checking Help files, tutorials and various mailing lists has produced
nothing useful.

I've used Gnucash for years on Windows and Mac with no problems. This is
so frustrating and time consuming that I'm thinking of going back to
spreadsheets.

Thanks for your time
Gra Smith

Derek Atkins-3
Hi,

You need to copy the GnuCash.app from the DMG to /Applications or
~/Applications and then run GnuCash from there.

I copy everything to Applications/GnuCash and run it from there, you can't
run it from the dmg.

Re: [GNC] Just updated to MacOSX Catalina and GnuCash will not open.

John Ralls-2
You only need to copy Gnucash.app. The other files, README.txt, NEWS.txt, etc. are in the dmg and renamed with the .txt so you can easily read them with QuickLook. They're also inside Gnucash.app (control-click on Gnucash.app in Finder and select "Show package contents" from the context menu) at Contents/Resources/share/doc/gnucash, though those aren't renamed for QuickLook.

John Ralls

Re: [GNC] Just updated to MacOSX Catalina and GnuCash will not open.

Dave H
Thanks John so they are but I think I'll just keep copying them over with
the app as it's a lot easier than digging down about 5 sub directories :-)
The dmg I have doesn't show them with .txt on the end of the file name or
if they are I've turned it off somehow but they open up when you double
click on them ok.

Cheers Dave H.

Installation is covered in the wiki, and linked directly on www.gnucash.org on the navigation menu (4th item under "Information")--"Installation".

Dave,

Showing the extensions (e.g. the .txt in foo.txt) is a preference in Finder's preferences on the Advanced tab.

You don't need to double click a text file to read it, you can just select it and tap the space bar. That actually works for a surprising variety of file types, not just text.

John Ralls

Hi,
I did find that and followed the instructions repeatedly - didn't work.
I'd just about given up but decided to follow all your prompting.
However, this time I removed all reference to earlier iterations. It
works! Now I have a major job resurrecting past records.
My thanks to David, John and Derek for your helpful responses.

I'm curious what you did that didn't work, as well as what you mean by "removed all references to earlier iterations." Would you elaborate?
