[GNC] Import QIF error (from Android to Windows)

michalbike
Hello everyone,

I have problem with import QIF file from Android (newest) to Windows version
higher than 2.19. So I can't use 3.x version. I try import QIF file exported
by Google Drive and the final step is fail import. Why? Does anybody know
this problem and solution?

Best regards

Re: [GNC] Import QIF error (from Android to Windows)

David Cousens
This tends to suggest that there is a problem with the format of the file or
with GnuCash's parsing of the file.

The following text file  file-format.txt
<http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/file/t375329/file-format.txt>
contains what is known about the QIF format. It is a proprietary format and
does not have a well standardized specification and varies in its
implementation as noted in the attached file.  It is not clear but you seem
to be importing a QIF file exported by the GnuCash version on Android. This
program is not maintained or produced by the GnuCash team. It is a separate
product and does not use the same code base.

The first thing to do will be to check the GnuCash log files (it may be
worth enabling logging and debug information) and rerunning the import in
GnuCash (https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Logging). You may also find the
following information on file locations useful in locating the log files
(https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations). This may give you
some information about where in the import process GnuCash is failing and
possibly enough to identify where in the imported file it is failing.

The QIF file can be examined with a text editor. Make a copy of the file and
only work on a copy not the original. Once you have identified where in the
file it is failing, locate that point in the file and compare the syntax
with that described in the above document. If it is a syntax element missing
you may simply be able to correct it and then try importing the modified
copy.

Are you able to import files exported from the most recent Android GnuCash
version (which version?) into versions less than 2.19 on your Windows 10
system?
Is it only failing for Windows 10 GnuCash V3.0 and up?

This will help in more clearly identifying whether it is a bug in the latest
Windows 10 GnuCash version causing the problem or whether the problem lies
with the export from the Android program.

This post was updated on .
Hi David, thanks for response.

I am using Windows 7 Pro x64 on my computer and always the newest GNU Cash
for Android. There is no problem with import QIF file from Android to 2.6.21
Windows version or older. Problem with import occured when GNU Cash was
publish in 3.1 version (new design). So, I think the problem od in desktop version, not
mobile, because general QIF file is OK.

Best regards!

Re: [GNC] Import QIF error (from Android to Windows)

cicko
Not sure if this will help your particular issue but I have not experienced
any issues with QIF files when moving from GnuCash v2 to v3.
I am, however, using MoneyManagerEx for Android to export .qif files and
that has not changed in the meantime.
You should be able to open the generated .qif file in any text editor and
compare to another one to try to identify any issues.
Some references I've collected while writing the QIF export module, can be
found here:

There is no more any ideas? Developers of desktop GNU Cash don't know
problem, developers od mobile version also. Users both apps also don't know
problem. There must be any solution of this case.

Kevin Thorne
So what does this mean?

Does online quotes no longer work with alphavantage in GnuCash?

Did you try looking at the QIF file to see whether there were obvious problems?

Have you tried any of the suggestions in the above posts? If so what were the
results?

There won't be a magic solution and no-one is going to be able to diagnose
the problem without additional information or if it really gets desperate a
copy of the .qif.  file you are trying to import.

Have you looked at the GnuCash log files?
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Logging. Was there anything indicating a
problem?

Have you started GnuCash with the debug switch? ( start with $gnucash
--debug at a terminal prompt  this gives more detail in the log files).
Have you examined your file to find out whether it deviates from the QIF
file formatting?https://www.w3.org/2000/10/swap/pim/qif-doc/QIF-doc.htm
Were there any obvious deviations?

Try these and post your results and someone stands a chance of being able to
help.

The only major changes to the qif import between 2.6.19 and 3.1 were a shift
from the guile1.8 to guile2.0 library, a change in the format of an example
qif file and some changes to the matching of dates. There was nothing
obvious that affected the parsing of the file in the commits that I could
find.

This might be of interest from the GnuCash Android change log:

Version 2.3.0 (2018-01-10)
Improved #696: QIF files are now always zipped regardless of the export
destination

Which would be fairly easy to diagnose by simply opening the troublesome
.qif file, as advised several times in this thread.

QIF file is OK in my opinion, because is opening by 2.6.21 but not by 3.0 or
newer. I don't know how could I do other options :/
