[GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

陳 志昌
Hi,

My GC is 3.2 and Finance::Quote is also up to date 1.47 in Windows 10.
Get Quote had been working well until yesterday. Get Quote window (perl is running) is now freezing and not working today.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

Thanks,
thomas

I have the same problem. I think AlphaVantage is having a problem.

I also think AlphaVantage is having a problem, due to I tried it on another laptop, it's still not working yet.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

Ethan Swint
In reply to this post by 陳 志昌
I'm also having trouble the last 36 hours or so, but the API is working, if
you put something like this in your web browser:

https://www.alphavantage.co/query?function=BATCH_STOCK_QUOTES&symbols=T&apikey=*yourAPIkeyhere*

It seems that Alphavantage has bumped their freebie access rate limit to
one every 12 seconds according to https://www.alphavantage.co/premium/

Finance::Quote's Alphavantage.pm has the following in lines 276-280:

        # Alpha Vantage recommends that API call frequency does not extend
far
        # beyond ~1 call per second so that they can continue to deliver
        # optimal server-side performance:
        #   https://www.alphavantage.co/support/#api-key
        sleep(1);

I'll try bumping that up to 12 and see what I get. When I tried to put some
print statements in the Perl scripts to follow along, I just got an error
message from GC.

Regards,
Ethan

but they don?t seem to change on the declarations when I don?t include
column-header for some reason. Perhaps this is a code issue as noted in a
previous reply. Since this might change, I?d say it?s safer to specify
buttons/labels as children of column-header for future durability.

Unfortunately, there is very little documentation on using GtkInspector,
and it seems the tool was designed for people who are doing the coding of
the app and are ?inyoursleep? familiar with the GUI elements and objects
used.

columns) are likely either class ?label? or ?GtkLabel? (depending on Gtk
version, 3.20 is the former, 3.18 the latter) but specifying this class
instead of the ID for the entire tree doesn?t seem to do anything. (I?m on
3.18 using Ubuntu 16.04, but I tried both with no result) You might have
better luck. Ideally, I?d rather style classes than IDs, especially since
in this case, the ID includes the column headers.

nodes for pretty much everything under it and the inspector doesn?t seem to
let me select any particular account label with any specificity or figure
out which node in the tree is which one I?m looking at on screen. (I
understand specificity for the web, but building a unique selector seems a
little different in GTK) I can only select the entire tree at once.

need different background and font colors. The inspector is supposed to
show a ?selected? node that might be useful here, but since I can't figure
out which child GtkLabel belongs to what, I?m not seeing that particular
?selected? node.  I?ll keep trying and poking around though.

I also think AlphaVantage is having a problem, due to I tried it on another
laptop, it's still not working yet.

Tommy,

Linux Mint is an Ubuntu based distribution. Lm 18 was based on Ubuntu
16.04 and the latest release Lm 19 is based on ubuntu 18.04. The
Software Manager has a standard build of GnuCash 2.6.19 and has a
flatpak version of V3.2 which has some issues in regard to accessing
some devices. It is possible some of these can be fixed with additional
flatpak components.

GnuCash is fairly easy to build on Linux Mint if anyone needs to stay
ahead of the versions available in the distributions. See the Wiki http
s://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/BuildUbuntu16.04. (It also covers Ubuntu
18.04 and Linux Mint 18 and now Linux Mint 19.)

It?s missing the colon (?:?) between account_tree and column-header. That
could be a typo in the email rather than in gtk.css, of course.

John Ralls

?column-header' is a pseudo selector? It looks like a Css node in
GtkInspector. I?ll give it a try.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

Megagrumpy
In reply to this post by 陳 志昌
I have been trying to follow the thread on this problem but I get very
confused. Has someone found a work around? Should I just leave Perl running
until it completes? I have left it for over 90 minutes and still I get a
rotating pointer. I have not had any quotes since July 31st.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

Paul Bates
Did my update on Saturday morning.  Sixty stocks took 18 minutes and no
misses.  I have no idea how long it would take during a heavy load time.
Their new tiered service rates suggest 12 minutes for 60 free quotes (5
requests per minute).  They want $20 for 15 requests per minute.  On the
upside it may be possible to adopt the US stocks batch quotes API... but I
had the impression it only operated during trading hours.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

Megagrumpy
I have just run Get Quotes for 4 hours and eventually I killed it by closing
the window and it came up with the message "There was a system error while
retrieving price quotes." I am not sure if this is because I shut it down or
if it had an error at some point in the 4 hours. Can anyone help with this?
It would be really useful if Perl could output a list of what was being
retrieved - even a count of how many were retrieved as it was working rather
than just being a blinking cursor in a black window.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

samsurd2
Had the same problem yesterday although my impatience didn't allow me to let
things run for 4 hours. After a couple of hours, I shut it down and got the
same error message. I'm using F::Q 1.47 and GNC 2.6.16 with Windows 10 on an
HP laptop. FWIW, I am trying to retrieve about 35 quotes (US stock/bond
funds). Over the course of the last couple of months, I've been getting
fewer and fewer of them so I've had to resort to manual entry for the
others.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

GnuCash - User mailing list
For US stocks/bonds/funds, I’d recommend using yahoo_JSON instead of alphavantage as the quote source. I haven’t had any trouble getting 25 quotes at a time that way. I think I still get 2 currency quotes via alphavantage, but that hasn’t been a problem either.

My recollection is that someone reported yahoo_JSON as less than useful for some non-US stocks/funds. But I can’t remember any specifics.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

samsurd2
I tried this. Went into Tools > Security Editor and changed all items to
yahoo_JSON. In Tools > Price Editor I request quotes but no joy! All I get
is minute after minute of a spinner but no quotes.

BTW, if I do the following for a single fund, I do get a correct quote.

    In a cmd.exe window:

        cd \Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\

        echo (yahoo_json "DBEF") | perl gnc-fq-helper

Do I need make some other change other than the one I described (like an
environmental variable) or am I not waiting long enough for quotes via
yahoo_JSON to be generated? Typically, how long is it taking for you to get
25 quotes?

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

GnuCash - User mailing list
My 25 quotes takes 10-15 seconds.

Check to see if you are accidentally asking for every currency conversion rate in the book. I think alphavantage is the default (and only?) source for currency quotes. If you’re trying to get too many of those, you’ll still be running into the alphavantage difficulties.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

David G Hamblen-2
In reply to this post by samsurd2
I ended switching all 7 of mine to yahoo_json, and it took a variety of
efforts:  updating F:Q from 1.46 to 1.47, closing and opening Gnucash,
making sure I had no AlphaVantage accounts lurking in the securities
editor....   Not sure which of those things made it work, but it's
working smoothly now.  My guess is the upgrade to F:Q was the key, but
maybe reopening GnuCash caused it to recognize that update.

I am using GnuCash 2.6.18 and I am not sure what version of F:Q I was using
but I reinstalled it a couple of days ago to ensure it was the latest
version. Still not getting any quotes at all. Have updated manually but at
more than 50 stocks that is quite arduous. It appears to me that the
suppliers of quotes are getting a bit more savvy that there is a potential
income stream that they could use. I already have on line accounts (Bank,
Broker, Stockopedia and Motley Fool) where I pay and where I can get quotes
but I do not suppose there is anyway of linking to those accounts?

Is there a possibility of importing quotes from an external file? I could
download my share data into Excel say, run a macro to strip out the date,
Share ID and quote and then import this into GC?

For GnuCash 2.6.18 you'd also need to set an environment variable with your
AlphaVantage API key. If you can upgrade to gnucash 2.6.21, you can set this
in the gnucash preferences instead.

Not that I know.

GnuCash 3.x introduces the ability to import prices from csv. It's not
available in gnucash 2.6.x

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

samsurd2
In reply to this post by Megagrumpy
I'm finding myself going down a similar rabbit hole. After editing my funds
(38 in all) to reflect yahoo_json as had been suggested elsewhere, I still
couldn't get any quotes. I removed Strawberry Perl using both Windows
Control Panel and File Explorer and then, for good measure, did a Registry
scrub using a utility I've used successfully for years. I then reinstalled
Strawberry Perl via the "Install Online Price Retrieval" utility which in
turn installed F::Q 1.47 and tried once more to get quotes. Again, no
success. This morning, I updated all items manually.

Since I've read that GNC 3.2 has the ability to import quotes from a CSV
file, I guess I'll try that now. I've been reluctant to install any 3.x
version because of the bugs that a new major version of any program exhibits
even though I know that the Gnucash developers do a good job of sorting out
such things. At worst, I can always go back to the 2.6.16 version for which
everything I use (except F::Q) works fine.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

David Carlson-4
Not quite... If you have a sacrificial computer such as a Virtualbox
machine, try release 3.2 on it first, along with a test copy of your data
file.  Then, if you do not like the results you have not corrupted your
main machine.

Before installing 3.2 on a Windows machine, I would suggest making a backup
of all the configuration files including the F:Q related stuff if you use
it before migrating.  Once a computer has had GnuCash 3.2 installed on it
it is changed as well as any data file that has been opened by it.  Then to
revert you would need to completely remove release 3.2 using the Windows
uninstaller (in my conservative opinion) and install release 2.6.21 to be
able to read files that release 3.2 touched.

On a another side note, I use a free third party program to track my
portfolios in nearly real-time.  If you are interested, Google 'Takestock2'
for more info.

Thanks Geert Janssens for your informative reply. I was not aware of the
environmental variable you mention. I have updated to GC 3.2 now as I am
interested in using the import facility you mention if I cannot get
Alphvantage to work. Do I need to set anything other than the Alphavantage
key in Settings?
