GC checkinstall denied, make install accepted

hdbender-2
After having many problems to install GC-2 on my PC (see my thread before), I tried to compile it myself, using checkinstall, but without success.
When using make install the installation was completed, and GC is running well, (not the banking tool). How comes?

*Looks into his crystal ball to divine how it failed for you*  Nope,
not getting anything.  Damn, I really need to work on my divination
skills.  You know, it would help if you actually sent in the
FAILURE, like maybe showing the errors you get when you try
to build it?   Keep in mind that "checkinstall" isn't our beast,
so if the code builds on it's own then it's quite possibly a
bug in checkinstall, so you might want to contact your distribution
for help on that.

Good Luck,

Hi,

Please be sure to CC gnucash-user on all replies...

Oh, it's okay.  I'm sorry I came off so snide.  It's just lots
of people say "it failed" without giving any information about
how it failed, so there's no way to do anything than ask for more
information.  It seems a waste of time when the initial query could
provide the failure.

Okay..  So you built it from source?  Or you installed it by
binary-package?

I don't know.  How did checkinstall fail?

What distro does your notebook use?

Well, you still haven't said what OS/Distro you use on your PC.
If you build gnucash from source, then you need to add --enable-hbci
when you run ./configure.  If you install binary packages then
the packager needs to have done that.

***** PLEASE CC GNUCASH-USER ON ALL REPLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And like I've said, if you build GnuCash from source you need to
--enable-hbci during configure.  That implies gnucash from source,
not using the binary packages.

What part of "SEND ALL REPLIES TO GNUCASH-USER" are you failing
to comprehend?

The checkinstall error appears to be a result of a missing library.
Try installing the ubuntu equivalent of openssl-devel?
Also, you probably want more than just --enable-hbci; you probably
also want to set a --prefix (and maybe other options, depending on
what feature you want).  Run "./configure --help" for a full list.

Derek--

While I certainly understand your frustration at this person's uninformative
post (and taking into account what I have learned in the past regarding your
work load), I nevertheless think that your sarcastic crystal ball remarks are
an inappropriate way to address a request for help. Without a doubt, there
isn't much information from the original poster, but your tone is insulting to
the other person, and demeans their very real confusion.

Your response is ironic in light of the starting tip that assures new Gnucash
users that "the developers are easy to contact"--yeah, easy to contact--just be
careful what you say, or you will get shamed out of the group.
